There are many sizes of countertop available. Laminate worktops tend to be available in the largest range of sizes and there are matching surfaces to complement the countertops, which include upstands, splashbacks and edging strips.
Laminate Countertop Sizes
Lengths of laminate surfaces tend to begin at 2m (2000mm). These range up to 4.1m (4100mm). The usual widths are 0.6m (600mm) for worktops and 0.9m (900mm) for breakfast bars. The usual depth (thickness) of the worktop is 38mm to 40mm.
Wood Worktop Sizes
Wood worktops are available in similar sizes to laminate. However, most ‘off the shelf’ wood worktops have a width of 620mm. Lengths tend to be standardised at 2m (2000mm), 3m (3000mm) and 4m (4000mm). Most UK companies offer different depths of wood countertop. The shallow worktops are 27mm deep and the standard range is 40mm deep. 40mm = 4cm.

Granite, Quartz and marble countertops tend to be made to measure by the stone masons supplying the countertop.
There are however composite solid surfaces that are designed to look like natural rock. These are available in standardised sizes, including 1.8m (1800mm) and 3.6m (3600mm) in length and 0.65m (650mm) in with. Breakfast bars often are available in 1800mm x 900mm and 3600mm x 900mm. Matching splashbacks (usually 3600mm x 900 x 6mm) and upstands (3600mm x 100mm x 13mm).
