What is an Upstand?

March 12, 2019 By Kitchen Leave a Comment

There are many surfaces in a kitchen. Most people think about the worktops, cupboard doors and cupboard carcasses before the other additions. However, often to achieve the perfect look, you will need to consider other surfaces such as splashbacks, upstands and of course the tiles or wall covering.

An Upstand
An upstand. The left hand site of this image will be against a wall and the cutaway section is the worktop.

Upstands are small upright surfaces that are made in the same colour and finish as worktops (these can be natural materials or man made). These edge around the worktop so that the finish where the worktop joints meet the wall are perfected in terms of appearance and protected from moisture which may result from spillages and splashed on the surface.

If you are concerned about moisture on your worktops, check out the Insperser. A great product to support good hygiene in your kitchen.

Have a look at our Buy Online section for great deals on all fittings for your kitchen.

Once fitted, a silicone bead can be applied around the top and bottom. This helps to ensure that no water seeps behind the upstand or behind the worktop joint. When you do this, it utilises two seals to protect your counter. The seal on the top and bottom mean that there is more flexibility if the worktop was to move slightly (movement can be caused by increases in temperature and humidity, not necessarily a poorly fitted surface). Increased flexibility means that there is less chance of the seal detaching from the surfaces when movement occurs. We hope this makes sense.
